在美国，考大学是不分什么文科理科的，等到二、三年级时才确定自己的专业方向。因为美国本科十分注重“通识教育”：在现代多元化的社会中，为受教育者提供通行
于不同人群之间的知识和价值观。
另外一个就是学生刚从高中毕业，对自己的能力以及将来究竟要学什么还不是很清楚，所以希望让学生在进入大学后，有一个适应、学习、了解的过程，然后再选择自
己喜欢的专业。
而美国大学的所谓“班级”，是以学校为单位的，所有同一年进入大学的学生，就是一个“班”，美国大学生的概念只有“某某年班”(相当于某某届)，比如耶鲁大学
1990 年班、哈佛大学 2012 年班等。
美国大学生之间建立感情的主要基地之一是学生宿舍，住在同一宿舍中的人，选择专业往往各不相同。由于大多数大学的学生宿舍只给一、二年级学生使用，所以住在同
一宿舍中的人，基本上在第三年就分手了
